Passing Gas

That Jack Davis.

The western New York congressional candidate who fashions himself a Straight Talk Express pulled into a Greece filling station Thursday. He may have pulled off the most eye-catching campaign photo-op the region's seen in years.

Letting voters enjoy a gas holiday with $1.50 gallons for an afternoon will get any pump-weary consumer pumped up. Davis worked with the retailer to pick up the difference per gallon; an estimated $2.75/gallon. The three-time Democratic candidate for New York's 26th Congressional District seat figures it cost him about $35,000; something more easily done when you're a self-made millionaire.

Davis' opponent, Republican newcomer Jon Powers, will also tell you that sort of political passing of gas can be done when you make the sort of money in petroleum trading Davis has made.

Did Davis get his message across? Or was it merely more political wind broken?

Jon Powers is a Democrat and is seeking the party's nomination against Jack Davis. Alice Kryzan is another Dem running in the race. Chris Lee is the lone Republican candidate.
