There Will Be Thud

David Paterson is as much "Albany" as anyone doing business in the capital. His father raised him on it. His Assembly service confirms his has always been the "Albany" way.

So now, with the state on the brink of its greatest fiscal meltdown in 30 years, Governor Paterson is calling on New York to cut up its credit cards and "learn to do more with less."

What would make us believe Paterson can flip an entire culture on its side? A $6.4 billion dollar budget that grew nearly a billion and a half dollars faster than projected? It is quite a thud. But is it enough?

The alarm he sounded in a statewide address from New York City may mean the deepest government cuts in years. Or perhaps, just a callback on the favors doled out in the latest budget cycle.

But have the "days of wine and roses" Hugh Carey told us were over ever really ended?

Legislators and the governor have a month to define New York's redefining before the real heavy lifting begins.

Paterson told us "there will be action." Let's see how much of it really improves the economic fortunes of the state for the long haul.
